Understanding Addiction

Q: What is addiction?
A: Addiction is a chronic, treatable medical condition characterized by intricate interactions between brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual's life experiences. Individuals with addiction compulsively use substances or engage in behaviors, often persisting even in the face of detrimental consequences. Prevention strategies and treatment methods for addiction are typically as effective as those for other chronic diseases.

Q: What is a substance use disorder?
A: A substance use disorder (SUD), also known as drug addiction, is a disease that affects a person’s brain and behavior. It leads to an inability to control the use of legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or medications.

Q: What are the symptoms and warning signs of substance use disorder?
A. The symptoms and warning signs of substance use disorder (SUD) can vary widely but generally include an inability to control drug use, intense cravings, and continued use despite harmful consequences. Physical signs may involve changes in appetite, sleep patterns, and deterioration of physical appearance. Psychological symptoms can include paranoia, anxiety, or mood swings, while behavioral signs might encompass neglect of responsibilities, withdrawal from social activities, and engaging in risky behaviors. It's important to recognize these signs early to seek help and support.

Q: Can I recover from substance use disorders?
A: Yes. Recovery from substance use disorders is possible. It is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential. With the right support and treatment, even those with severe and chronic substance use disorders can overcome their illness and regain health and social function.

Q: What is withdrawal? How Long does it last?
A: Withdrawal occurs when someone stops using or significantly reduces their intake of a substance like alcohol or drugs. The symptoms can vary based on the substance and individuals. Physical symptoms typically last 3 to 5 days, but psychological symptoms, such as anxiety or depression, may persist for weeks or months. If you are experiencing withdrawal, consider seeking professional guidance for a safe detox process.

Detoxification, commonly known as “detox”, refers to the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body. The liver primarily carries out this process, transforming harmful compounds into less toxic or more readily excretable substances.

Q: Is it safe to drink alcohol during pregnancy?
A: No, it is not safe to drink alcohol during pregnancy. Even small amounts of alcohol can have harmful effects on the developing baby. Alcohol can cross the placenta and reach the baby’s bloodstream, leading to a range of problems,   including:
  1. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs): These conditions can cause physical, mental, and behavioral issues. The severity varies, but they can be lifelong and serious.
  2. Miscarriage: Alcohol use during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage.
  3. Premature birth: Alcohol use during pregnancy raises the risk of premature birth.
  4. Low birthweight: Alcohol use during pregnancy increases the risk of low birthweight.
There is no safe amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether. Make sure to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
